Discover the BVI by Boat
Welcome to the British Virgin Islands, where breathtaking landscapes, rich Caribbean culture, and crystal-clear turquoise waters come together to create an unforgettable island experience. Known as the sailing capital of the world, the BVI is best explored by boat. Discover sheltered bays, vibrant snorkeling reefs, pristine white-sand beaches, and hidden gems accessible only by water. A day charter is the perfect way to experience the beauty of these islands, explore at your own pace, and make the most of your time in paradise.
What Is a Day Charter in the BVI?
Whether you’re visiting on a cruise ship or staying on one of the islands, a day charter is a fantastic way to explore the British Virgin Islands. Your day begins with a captain and crew welcoming you aboard a sailboat or powerboat before setting off to discover the islands’ most beautiful destinations.
Some charters offer set itineraries, while others provide the flexibility to tailor your day to your interests. Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply looking to unwind, there’s something for everyone. Spend your time snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, enjoying refreshing drinks and delicious snacks, discovering historic landmarks, or soaking up the laid-back Caribbean atmosphere at a beach bar. You might even swim alongside sea turtles near Little Harbour on Peter Island or take a leisurely stroll along a pristine white-sand beach.
Day charters typically last several hours or a full day, giving you the freedom to explore multiple destinations without committing to a multi-day sailing trip. You may choose to reserve the whole boat privately, or join other small parties in a shared experience. Whether it’s your first visit or a return to your favorite islands, spending a day on the water is an unforgettable way to experience the beauty, adventure, and charm of the BVI.

Which Type of Day Charter Is Best for You?
A BVI day charter comes in a few different ways. You may choose to experience the sailing capital of the world by hoisting sails on a sailboat, or speed through the Sir Francis Drake Channel on a powerboat. And, whether a private or shared charter, you are guaranteed to make lifelong memories.
Sailing Catamaran Charters
Sailing charters in the BVI offer a chance to experience the Caribbean’s famous trade winds, turquoise waters, and rich maritime history firsthand. As you glide between islands, you’ll not only experience the art of sailing but also follow in the footsteps of the pirates who once roamed these waters. Rather than focusing on speed, sailboats offer a relaxed, spacious atmosphere where you can unwind, take in the stunning scenery, and enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. It’s the perfect way to slow down, embrace island life, and experience the BVI from the water.
Powerboat Charters
Unlike sailing charters, powerboat day charters are ideal for covering greater distances in less time, allowing you to fit more destinations into your day. Without the need to raise sails, powerboats offer a quicker way to travel between islands, making it easier to explore multiple beaches, snorkeling spots, and iconic BVI landmarks in a single trip. If your goal is to see as much as possible during your time on the water, a powerboat charter offers the flexibility and speed to make the most of your BVI adventure.
Private vs. Shared Charters
Once you’ve chosen your preferred vessel, the next step is deciding between a shared or private charter. A shared charter allows you to join other small groups aboard the same boat, making it a fun and social way to explore the BVI while creating lasting memories with your friends or family—and perhaps meeting a few new faces along the way.
If you prefer a more personalized experience, a private charter offers exclusive use of the boat for your group, along with greater flexibility to customize your itinerary. Whether you want to spend the day snorkeling secluded reefs, relaxing on pristine beaches, or exploring your favorite islands, a private charter lets you shape the experience around your interests.
Depending on the company and the vessel, prices will vary for a shared versus private day charter in the BVI.

Best Places to Visit on a BVI Day Charter
The British Virgin Islands is home to a plethora of destinations sure to stun any visitor due to its beauty and unique landscape. Below are just a few of the spots that are offered on day charter experiences.

The Baths, Virgin Gorda
One of the most iconic destinations in the British Virgin Islands, The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda is a breathtaking natural wonder known for its enormous granite boulders, winding passageways, hidden pools, and vibrant snorkeling spots. These remarkable rock formations were created over millions of years, forming a maze of boulders along the coastline that gives The Baths its distinctive, almost otherworldly feel.
Arriving by day charter, your captain will secure the boat to a mooring ball before you head ashore to explore this incredible landscape. Follow the twisting paths between towering boulders, squeeze through narrow crevices, and discover natural pools and secluded grottoes along the way. With stunning scenery and countless picture-perfect spots, The Baths is an unforgettable stop and a must-see on any BVI adventure.

Norman Island
Norman Island, often called Treasure Island, is a favorite stop for BVI day charter guests, thanks to its fascinating pirate legends, beautiful anchorages, and incredible snorkeling. Whether you’re looking to relax ashore or explore beneath the surface, this island offers something for everyone.
Drop anchor in the bay and enjoy a delicious lunch at Pirate’s Bight, or head out to the legendary Willy T, the famous floating bar known for its lively atmosphere. If exploring underwater is more your style, Norman Island is home to some of the BVI’s most memorable snorkeling spots. Discover The Caves, a series of rocky grottoes steeped in tales of hidden pirate treasure, or venture just outside the bay to The Indians, a cluster of dramatic rock pinnacles surrounded by vibrant coral, colorful fish, and a thriving marine ecosystem.
With its blend of history, adventure, and laid-back island vibes, Norman Island is an unforgettable addition to any BVI day charter.

Cooper Island and Peter Island
Highlight clear-water swimming, scenic anchorages, and opportunities to enjoy a slower-paced day.
Cooper Island and Peter Island sit side by side in the Sir Francis Drake Channel, offering two distinct experiences for day charter guests. Cooper Island is a lively stop with plenty to explore, from beautiful snorkeling spots and a boutique to a coffee shop, rum bar, and waterfront restaurant. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, grab a drink, or enjoy a bite to eat.
Just nearby, Peter Island offers a quieter, more laid-back escape. Little Harbour is a peaceful anchorage and a favorite snorkeling spot, known for its resident sea turtles that can often be spotted gliding through the clear waters. Whether you’re in the mood for a little island exploring or a tranquil swim alongside marine life, these neighboring islands offer the best of both worlds.

Jost Van Dyke
Jost Van Dyke is another famous island located on the northwest side of Tortola. It is home to the famous Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay, the inventor of the famous and fruity Painkiller drink. White Bay, correctly named due to its white-sand beach, provides guests with a unique and fun experience for those who want a mixture of party and relaxation. The island also has exciting hikes and rich Caribbean culture.
For BVI Day charters, no single itinerary can comfortably cover every destination in one day. It is important to choose an itinerary based on your desired experiences, but don’t worry, the captain and crew will gladly help you!
How Much Does a BVI Day Charter Cost?
The cost of day charter boats in the BVI depends on a lot of different things. As a general guide, a BVI day charter can cost anywhere from around $100 per person for a shared trip to several thousand dollars for a private boat charter. Larger luxury vessels and specialized itineraries can cost more. Private experiences can sometimes be more expensive, but allow for more flexibility in the itinerary.
Furthermore, the type of boat can determine the price. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing sail between islands or a powerboat adventure packed with snorkeling and beach stops, there are options for a range of budgets. A powerboat uses more fuel than a sailboat, but requires less work from the crew and is usually a bit smaller.
Other factors that can influence the cost of your day charter include the length of your trip, your chosen itinerary, and any additional food or beverages. When booking, your captain and crew will work with you to plan the perfect day on the water, discuss your preferences, and clarify any additional costs so you know exactly what to expect.
